Narratively is excited to announce our second Untold Story Award. We’re scouring the world for our next big, award-winning feature stories, ones that require more time and a bigger budget than most, and illuminate people and communities that would otherwise go unnoticed or uncelebrated. We’d like storytellers to view this as an opportunity to really dig into that dream story you’ve always wanted to report, but haven’t had the time or resources to undertake.
For our 2018 Untold Story Award we’re looking for Deep Dives on the theme “Renegades.” We will accept completed pieces or detailed proposals.
Finalists will be selected by our guest judge Shaun King.
What’s a Deep Dive? An epic feature story that requires long-term, in-depth reporting. The reporter should spend time as a fly on the wall in the daily lives of their subjects, and become an expert on the characters and the topic (up to 6,000 words).
What do we mean by “Renegades?” We’re looking for stories of rebels with a cause, dedicated activists, game changers, anyone going against the grain and making a real, measurable impact. Not limited to the political world, we’re seeking stories of people who are leading the charge and shaking up whatever sphere they occupy — from the man who spent 40 years fighting to legalize psychedelics for therapeutic use to an outlaw doula operating illegally in rural California, to the woman who went to prison for killing her abuser and is now working to change the laws that put her away.
Take a look at the winner of the first Untold Story Award here, and the examples linked above, for a sense of what we’re looking for.
Deadline: May 21, 2018 (winner will be announced in the fall)
Prizes: One Grand Prize Winner will receive $5,000 to fund their story
Guest Judge Shaun King is an award winning columnist for The Intercept and the Writer In Residence at Harvard Law School’s Fair Punishment Project.
